A tiled floor can look level, neat and perfectly finished while still moving water exactly where it needs to go. That is the point of a properly designed fall. This guide to tile drainage slopes explains what homeowners, renovators and property managers should look for before tiles are laid – because drainage problems are usually created in the preparation stage, not at the final grouting stage.

A few millimetres in the wrong place can leave water sitting along a wall, at a doorway or in the corner of a shower area. Over time, that pooling can stain grout, create slip concerns, put pressure on waterproofing and make a quality renovation feel poorly finished. Good tiling is not just about straight lines and clean cuts. It is about making the finished surface work.

Why tile drainage slopes need proper planning

A drainage slope, often called a fall, is the gradual angle built into a tiled surface so water runs towards its intended outlet or drainage edge. The key word is gradual. A floor that is too flat will hold water. A floor that falls too sharply can feel awkward underfoot, create lipping between tiles, and make furniture or fixtures sit poorly.

The fall must be considered alongside the waterproofing system, tile size, floor layout, threshold heights and the location of the drainage point. These elements are connected. Changing one late in the job can affect all the others.

In older Sydney terraces and apartment bathrooms, for example, existing floor levels can be restrictive. There may be limited depth available to form a proper screed fall without creating an issue at the doorway. That does not mean the fall should be skipped or improvised. It means the floor build-up needs to be assessed early, before materials are selected and work begins.

A practical guide to tile drainage slopes

The slope should be formed in the substrate or screed, then supported by the tile installation. It should never be created by simply applying extra adhesive under selected tiles. Adhesive is designed to bond tiles, not to compensate for a poorly prepared floor. Building the fall with adhesive often leads to inconsistent coverage, hollow spots, uneven tile edges and a surface that is difficult to keep clean.

Understanding fall ratios

Falls are commonly expressed as a ratio. A fall of 1:80 means the surface drops 1 unit in height for every 80 units in length. Across one metre, that works out to a drop of about 12.5 mm. A 1:60 fall equates to roughly 16.7 mm over one metre, while 1:100 is a 10 mm drop over one metre.

These figures are useful reference points, not a substitute for a site-specific design. The required slope can vary depending on whether the area is internal or external, exposed to weather, subject to heavy use, or governed by a particular waterproofing system or project specification. Australian Standards, the National Construction Code requirements that apply to the project, product instructions and the design documentation all need to be considered.

For tiled wet areas, the finished surface needs enough fall to shed water without becoming uncomfortable or visually obvious. For balconies and outdoor areas, the need to move rainfall away efficiently can be greater, particularly where a space is exposed to wind-driven rain or receives limited sun. A shallow fall that performs acceptably inside may not be adequate on an exposed balcony.

Start with the drainage point and highest edges

A slope cannot be set properly until the drainage point, perimeter heights and finished floor level are known. The installer works backwards from those levels to establish where the high points must sit. In a shower area, the surrounding floor needs to guide water towards the floor outlet without creating low pockets near walls or under the screen line.

On a balcony, the highest point may be at the building wall or door threshold, with the fall running out towards the drainage edge. The transition at the doorway deserves particular care. It must manage water while maintaining suitable clearance, waterproofing continuity and a practical step-free or low-profile finish where required.

This is why a quick quote based only on square metres can be misleading. Two balconies of the same size may require very different preparation work depending on slab condition, existing levels, tile thickness and drainage layout.

Tile size and layout affect the finished fall

Large-format tiles can create a clean, modern look, but they are less forgiving on floors that fall from several directions. A 600 x 600 mm tile may work well on a broad, single-direction balcony fall. It can be difficult to use around a central drainage point where the floor needs multiple planes.

Smaller tiles or mosaics are often more suitable for areas with compound falls. Their additional grout joints allow the tiled surface to follow the slope without forcing corners up or creating sharp edges. This is one reason mosaic flooring remains practical in certain bathroom and commercial wet areas, even when larger tiles are used on the walls.

Tile selection should also account for slip resistance. Outdoor entertaining areas, pool surrounds, commercial entries and frequently wet surfaces need an appropriate finish for the location. A tile that looks right in a showroom may become unsafe or difficult to maintain once exposed to water, sunscreen, food service traffic or regular cleaning.

Common slope mistakes that cause trouble

The most common issue is a floor that appears flat but contains small undulations. Water then settles in scattered puddles rather than moving consistently in one direction. These low spots are often caused by rushed screeding, poor substrate assessment or attempts to correct levels during tile laying.

Another frequent problem is creating a fall in the wrong direction. Water should not be encouraged towards door frames, wall junctions or areas where it can sit against finishes not designed for ongoing exposure. On external tiled work, this can contribute to staining, efflorescence and deterioration around edges over time.

Poor tile cuts around drainage points can also undermine a well-formed slope. The tile layout should be planned so the cuts are balanced and the surface remains even. A poorly positioned drain or an oversized tile pattern can produce awkward triangular cuts and pronounced lipping. Sometimes the right answer is a different tile size, a change in layout, or a linear drainage solution specified early in the design.

Finally, do not treat waterproofing and falls as separate tasks. The waterproofing system must be installed over a properly prepared substrate and detailed correctly at corners, penetrations, thresholds and junctions. Tiles and grout are the visible wear surface. They are not the primary water management system beneath the finish.

Bathrooms, balconies and commercial areas are not the same job

Internal bathrooms generally call for controlled falls that are comfortable to walk on and compatible with fixtures, screens and floor transitions. A level-entry style can be achieved in some projects, but it requires careful planning of set-downs, substrate depth and drainage details. It is not something to promise after demolition has started.

Balconies and terraces face a harsher set of conditions. Heat, UV exposure, rain, leaf debris and building movement all matter. Falls must be continuous, surface water must have a clear path away, and edge details need to suit the balcony system rather than just the tile pattern. In apartment buildings, this work may also involve strata requirements and access restrictions that need to be factored into the scope.

Commercial spaces require another layer of judgement. A café entry, aged care facility or retail fit-out may need a surface that handles frequent cleaning, foot traffic and wet weather while still meeting the visual standard of the venue. The correct slope is only one part of the solution. Tile rating, movement joints, substrate condition and cleaning methods all influence long-term performance.

What to ask before tiling begins

Before approving a tiled wet area or exterior surface, ask how the falls will be established, where the finished floor levels will sit, and how the tile format suits the drainage layout. A capable contractor should be able to explain the preparation method in plain language and identify any constraints before tiles are ordered.
