In recent years, the tiling trade in Australia has been facing a concerning decline. Traditionally a respected trade known for its craftsmanship and attention to detail, tiling is now struggling to attract the younger generation. This is not only impacting individual careers but also the broader building industry that relies on skilled tradespeople.
In this blog, we’ll explore the reasons behind this decline and propose strategies to rejuvenat interest in this essential trade.
There seems to be a consistent lack of awareness and recognition. Tiling, unlike trades such as plumbing or electrical work, is often overshadowed and seen as less prestigious or lucrative. There’s a common misconception that tiling doesn’t offer sustainable or rewarding career prospects.

Unfortunately, many skilled tilers are reaching retirement age, and there is not a sufficient influx of young talent to replace them. The knowledge and expertise of seasoned tradespeople risk being lost without effective mentorship and transfer of skills.
Young people may perceive tiling as a monotonous or outdated trade, not appreciating the innovative techniques and materials emerging in the field. The trade’s image does not currently highlight exciting advancements or the creative side of tiling.
Strategies to Revitalise the Tiling Trade
I personally think highlighting more success stories of individuals who have forged a very successful career in this trade will enhance the desire in young trades entering the work force.
We need more larger tiling companies with the knowledge to train and offer Apprenticeships, or subsidise training programs and certifications to lower entry barriers for young people considering this trade. This could be a great incentive and a start to prompt the younger generation.
Promote Innovation and Creativity – showcase new technologies, sustainable materials, and design possibilities within the tiling sector. Encourage collaboration with architectural and interior design professionals to integrate tiling innovations into contemporary projects.
Enhance Public Perception – use media platforms and social media to change the narrative around tiling by emphasising its importance in design and construction. Develop branding initiatives that position tiling as a modern and desirable career choice.
Work with government bodies to promote trade education in schools and recognise it as a valid alternative to a university degrees. Encourage industry bodies to support initiatives that celebrate excellence in tiling through competitions and awards.
The tiling trade holds an important place within the Australian building industry, characterised by skilful craftsmanship that enhances both functional and aesthetic aspects of spaces.
Addressing the current challenges requires a concerted effort from educational institutions, industry bodies, and government entities. By taking steps to raise awareness, invest in education, and change perceptions, we can ensure that the art of tiling thrives for future generations, preserving the important role it plays in our built environment. It’s time to reinvigorate interest in tiling, celebrate its potential, and ensure its longevity as a cornerstone of craftsmanship in Australia.
