Why laundry waterproofing deserves proper attention

A laundry is often treated as a low-priority room during a renovation. The floor area is small, the cabinetry covers a lot of it, and there may be no shower to make the risk obvious. That thinking leads to shortcuts: incomplete membrane coverage, rushed floor preparation or tiling installed before the waterproofing system has cured.

The result is rarely immediate. Water damage often develops gradually, showing up as lifting tiles, swollen skirting, mouldy odours, deteriorating sheet flooring in the next room, or staining to a ceiling below. By the time those signs appear, the repair may involve removing finished surfaces to inspect and rectify the substrate.

The required level and extent of waterproofing depend on the room layout, floor waste provision, adjoining spaces and the project’s relevant compliance requirements. Domestic wet-area work needs to be assessed against the National Construction Code and applicable Australian Standards, including AS 3740. Cracks, penetrations and uneven areas need appropriate treatment before the membrane begins. On timber flooring, movement is the main issue. The sheet substrate, framing support and fixing method must be suitable for tiling and waterproofing, otherwise movement can transfer through the system and crack grout or tiles.

Sheet membranes can be appropriate in some situations, particularly where their detailing, speed of installation or crack-bridging properties suit the project. They demand accurate laps, joins and termination details. Neither liquid nor sheet products are automatically better. Waterproofing must be allowed to cure before tiling. This timing varies with the product and site conditions. Cool weather, humidity and poor ventilation can extend drying times.
