A tile can look right in the showroom and still be the wrong choice once water, bare feet, sunscreen or wet shoes are involved. Slip rating tiles explained properly means looking beyond colour, size and finish to understand how a tile performs under the conditions it will actually face.
For a Sydney bathroom, balcony, pool surround or commercial entry, the rating is not a decorative detail. It affects safety, cleaning, comfort and, in many projects, compliance. The right choice is rarely the highest rating available. It is the rating that suits the area, the expected contamination and the people using it.
What a tile slip rating actually measures
Slip resistance describes the grip available between a person’s footwear or bare foot and a tile surface. It is tested under controlled conditions, usually with a specified contaminant such as water or oil. The result helps designers, builders and property owners choose a surface that reduces the chance of slips in a particular setting.
That distinction matters. A tile is not simply “non-slip” in every situation. A polished porcelain tile may be perfectly acceptable in a dry living room, yet unsuitable near an outdoor pool. A heavily textured tile can offer excellent grip in the wet, but may be harder to clean in a kitchen or hospitality venue where grease and food residue are part of daily use.
Australian projects commonly refer to two testing systems: P ratings and R ratings. They answer related but different questions, so one should not be treated as a direct substitute for the other.
P ratings: the common measure for wet barefoot areas
P ratings come from pendulum testing, where a standard rubber slider passes over a wet tile surface to assess friction. In Australia, classifications generally run from P0 through to P5, with a higher number indicating greater slip resistance in the test conditions.
For homeowners, P ratings are often the most useful reference point for areas where water is expected, especially bathrooms, laundries, balconies and pool surrounds. They are also relevant to public and commercial spaces where occupants may track water inside.
A bathroom floor, for example, needs a practical balance. Very smooth tiles can become slippery when wet, particularly around the shower entry or bath. At the other extreme, a highly textured tile may make regular cleaning more demanding, as soap residue can sit within the surface texture. The best result is a tile that provides suitable wet grip without turning a normal cleaning routine into hard work.
Barefoot use changes the decision as well. Pool decks and shower areas should be assessed for wet barefoot traffic, not just for someone wearing shoes. This is why a tile selected purely because it has a general slip rating, without checking the relevant test result and intended use, can create problems later.
Where P ratings are particularly useful
P ratings are commonly considered for internal wet areas and external residential surfaces exposed to rain. They are especially helpful when choosing tiles for shower floors, bathroom floors, apartment balconies, patios and pool surrounds.
Small-format tiles can also improve practical grip because the additional grout joints break up the surface. This is one reason mosaics are frequently used on shower floors. However, grout joints are not a replacement for selecting an appropriate tile surface. The tile itself still needs to suit the location.
R ratings: useful where shoes, oil or grease are involved
R ratings are determined through a ramp test. A person wearing standard safety footwear walks on an inclined tiled surface while oil is applied. Ratings generally range from R9 to R13, with higher ratings designed for more demanding conditions.
This test is particularly relevant in commercial and industrial-style settings where footwear, oil, grease or heavy traffic are factors. Think commercial kitchens, food preparation areas, loading zones, workshops and some hospitality back-of-house spaces.
An R10 or R11 tile may sound like an obvious upgrade over an R9 tile, but higher is not automatically better for every job. Higher-rated tiles often have a more pronounced texture. That texture can hold dirt, make mopping less effective and affect the overall appearance of a refined retail or residential space. In a commercial kitchen, that trade-off may be worthwhile. In a powder room, it usually is not.
For projects where safety requirements are formalised, the selected tile should be checked against the project specification, building classification and applicable Australian standards. A product brochure alone is not enough. Ask for current test information from the supplier and ensure it applies to the exact tile finish being supplied.

Balconies, patios and external paths
Outdoor tiles face rain, leaf matter, dust, algae and changing temperatures. A tile that appears safe when dry can be slick after a shower, especially on a shaded balcony or in a courtyard that dries slowly.
For exterior work, slip resistance is only one part of the decision. The tile must also be appropriate for outdoor exposure, and the installation needs proper falls, drainage detailing, movement joints and substrate preparation. No slip rating can compensate for puddling water or an incorrectly prepared balcony surface.
In established Sydney apartments and terraces, balconies often have limited drainage capacity and tight threshold details. Tile selection should be made alongside the waterproofing and drainage plan, not after those decisions are locked in.
Pool surrounds
Pool areas combine wet bare feet, sunscreen, splashing water and high summer traffic. They need a surface with reliable wet barefoot performance, but also one that will not be excessively abrasive underfoot. Very rough tiles may offer strong grip but can be uncomfortable for children and adults walking around the pool all day.
Consider heat as well as slip resistance. Dark tiles can become uncomfortably hot in direct sun, while pale or mid-tone porcelain options are often more comfortable and easier to live with. Samples should be viewed outdoors, not just under showroom lighting.
Kitchens, entries and commercial spaces
A residential kitchen generally needs a durable, easy-clean floor rather than the aggressive texture suited to a commercial kitchen. Entry areas may need more grip if they receive rain from shoes, umbrellas or open doors.
Commercial projects should be assessed according to their actual operation. A café dining area, a retail shop and an aged care corridor have different slip risks, cleaning methods and traffic patterns. For landlords, strata managers and business owners, this is where a site-specific recommendation protects both users and the long-term appearance of the floor.
Why the installation still matters
A suitable slip rating does not fix poor workmanship. Incorrect falls can leave water sitting on a bathroom or balcony floor. Lippage between tiles can become a trip point. Inadequate preparation can lead to cracked tiles, loose edges and grout deterioration that make a surface harder to maintain safely.
Tile size, joint width and layout also affect the finished result. On a shower floor, for instance, the tile format needs to work with the drainage falls. On a large outdoor area, movement joints and substrate condition need to be addressed before tiles are laid. These are not extras added at the end of a quote. They are part of getting a durable, safe tiled surface.
